Within the statutory activity four main research projects are currently conducted:
- Selection and investigations on genetic basis of fish improving
- Optimisation of fish culture technology in ponds and in controlled conditions
- Modelling the elements of biotechnology and environmental conditions of carp culture
- Investigations on multidisciplinary interaction between fishpond complexes and environment
Apart from the above problems another also were carried out in the Institute. Among them the most important are:
- assessment of species compositions of plant and animal communities in ponds
- studies of the metabolic conversation in pond ecosystems, the chemical and biological processes depending on fish production
- development of a model of growth, productivity, and survival rate of carp
elaboration of rules and methods pond fertilisation
- studies on the possibility of treating beet-sugar wastes used as fertilisers in ponds
- a study on the biotechnology of intensive commercial carp farming and the production of one- and two- year old stocking material
- development of production technology of full-valued stabilised feeds for various species and different age classes of fish
- elaboration of methods of preventing excessive eutrophication of pond ecosystems
- studies on the technology of controlled reproduction of carp and herbivorous fish and on the energy-saving methods in fry rearing in controlled conditions
- adaptation of the biotechnology of thermophilus fish production to Polish conditions (african catfish, Clarias gariepinus and tilapia, Tilapia sp.
- development of the Polish inbred carp lines of fixed genetic and utility traits
- the establishment of live gene bank of 18 Polish and foreign inbreeding carp lines as a basis for investigations and production of heterozygous crosses
- determination of methodology in the complex characteristics of the genetic and usability of inbred lines and their crosses
